Annual GIVE a little life DAY Gearing Up
|
Staff
and volunteers at the Victoria Hospital Foundation
are busy getting ready for the 6th Annual GIVE
a little life DAY radio-a-thon. The 12 hour
event will take place on Friday, December 2nd,
2011 from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Rawlco Radio will
move all three Prince Albert stations to the
Main Lobby of the Victoria Regional Hospital.
Throughout the day donations can be dropped
off in person or they can be phoned in to either
a Local or Toll Free number. The Victoria Hospital
Foundation’s web site also offers the ability
to make VISA and MasterCard credit card donations
on their secure web site link using the
DONATE NOW button. The GOAL this year is to
raise enough funds to replace and upgrade the
Anesthetic Machines in
the Operating Rooms at the Victoria Regional
Hospital. Anesthetic Machines are used to put
patients to sleep and monitor their vital signs
during the operation.
Last year the Victoria Regional Hospital preformed
more than 5,100 operations. The Anesthetic Machines
are now over ten years old. Parts for repairs
and maintenance are getting difficult to locate.
Rob Dalziel, executive director with the Victoria
Hospital Foundations says: “Medical technology
of this caliber comes with a cost, so our goals
are high. Each machine costs $150,000. The Victoria
Regional Hospital has four Operating Rooms”.
This year the foundation has arranged for an
Anesthetic Machine to be on display at GIVE
a little life DAY and a Factory Representative
will also be on hand to participate in the broadcast
and give demonstrations. In addition, doctors
and nurses from the O.R. Unit will also be participating
throughout the day.
Diane Matheson, volunteer chair, of the Victoria
Hospital Foundation said, “This is a tremendous
opportunity for: individuals, businesses, groups,
and organizations to really support their hospital
by making a difference in the type of health
care offered through their donations”.
Information about the 6th Annual GIVE a little
life DAY is available on the Victoria Hospital’s
web site: www.helpthevic.ca or by contacting
the foundation office.

Hospital Foundation’s Golf Fund Raiser Results
|
Expectant
mothers and their “babies-to-be” can feel more
confident about the care they will receive in
the Maternity Unit at the Victoria Regional Hospital
thanks to 200 golfers, event sponsors and donors.
It was those people who came together to help
raise over $88,000 at the 14th Annual Dr. OK Hjertaas
(jer tass) Memorial Golf Classic. The money will
be used to help purchase Vital Signs Monitors
for the Nursery in the Maternity Unit.
Each year more than 1,600 babies are delivered
at the “Vic”. Many of those require specialized
medical care and support. While most deliveries
are routine, doctors will refer both expectant
mothers from Prince Albert and as well as from
central and northern Saskatchewan to the Victoria
Regional Hospital if there are concerns for
mom and or baby. That is because a higher level
of medical care and equipment is available at
the “Vic”.
The winning teams in the “Best Ball – Texas
Scramble” event were:
3rd Place with a team score of 59 the Mark
Engen Team
2nd Place with a team score of 58 the Rick
Leaderhouse team
1st Place with a team score of -14 the Martin
Ring Team
(Martin Ring, Dr. Louis Poulin, Dennis Brown
and Gordon Brown)
On hand to preset the trophy and prizes were:
Millie Hjertaas, wife of the late Doctor Orville
Hjertaas as well as sons Doug, Don, Randy and
Rick. The boys also played in the event.
Top Six individual Fund Raisers were:
Brenda Cripps $ 1,635
Dr. Randy Friesen $ 1,700
“Barney’ Hjertaas $ 2,000
Vi Akers $ 2,715
Dr. Louis Poulin $12,145
Rick Leaderhouse $13,350
Qualifiers for the Arctic Cat Quad were Dr.
Louis Poulin and Rick Leaderhouse. Both have
a history of donating their prizes back to the
Victoria Hospital Foundation for future fund
raising.
Golfers came from throughout the Prince Albert
Parkland Health Region as well as neighbouring
provinces and the U.S. Rob Dalziel said, “Each
year we see families and friends come together
to participate in this fun fund raiser. For
some it is the only time they golf all year.
In addition, we see groups of lifelong friends
return to Prince Albert to be a part of the
event.” Dalziel is especially pleased to see
so many doctors, nurses and hospital staff involved.
“I guess that is the ultimate vote of support
as to the need and the purpose, when see staff
pitch in and help”, commented Dalziel.
"The real winners, from the event, will
be all the people who will benefit from enhanced
health as a result of the new medical equipment”,
stated Diane Matheson, chair of the Victoria
Hospital Foundation.
Next year’s event is already booked for Friday,
August 24th 2012.

Radio Bingo Loonie Pot win makes Zuck a “Lucky Duck”

A
regular player in the Victoria Hospital Foundation’s
“Weekly Radio Bingo”, Helen Zuck, has only missed
one game since it started in February of 2009.
Helen said, “I am still shaking with excitement
since my big win”. She plans to share some of
the winnings with her sister Brenda, who she
refers to as, “My good luck charm”. Getting
a hair perm is also on her agenda. Helen said
she plans to continue playing every week since
the proceeds go to such a good cause.
Rob Dalziel, executive director
with the Victoria Hospital Foundation said,
Weekly Radio Bingo has now paid out over $200,000
in prizes to winners since its launch. Proceeds
are used to help purchase medical equipment
for the Victoria Regional Hospital.
Weekly Radio Bingo is broadcast
every Thursday beginning at 7:00 pm and can
be heard on Today’s Country 900 CKBI, in La
Ronge on 95.9 FM and in Big River on 92.5 FM.
The weekly game packs cost just $5.00 and are
available through a network of retailers in
Prince Albert and across central and northern
Saskatchewan. Details about retail locations,
rules and a list of recent winners are posted
on the Victoria Hospital Foundation’s web site:

The
14th Annual Dr. O.K. Hjertaas Golf Classic got
a fund raising boost of $2,000 from four Prince
Albert and area Pediatricians. Each year the
event raises funds to help purchase medical
equipment for the Victoria Regional Hospital.
This year funds will go to purchase up to five
Vital Signs Monitors for the hospital’s Nursery,
in the Maternity Unit. Last year more than 1,600
babies were delivered at the Victoria Regional
Hospital. Many of those newborns required specialized
monitoring and medical care.
“Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan are
booming both economically and in population
growth. That has put additional pressure on
the “Vic’s” Maternity Unit”, said Rob Dalziel,
executive director with the Victoria Hospital
Foundation. In Prince Albert and throughout
central and northern Saskatchewan often, if,
the attending physician has concerns about baby,
mother or both they will be referred to the
Victoria Regional Hospital where greater levels
of medical care, equipment and specialized expertise
are available.
The 14th Annual Hjertaas Golf Classic is set
to go on Friday, August 26th at Cooke Municipal
Golf Course.

Park Memorial Chapel and Prince Albert Memorial
Gardens have been involved every year since
the inception of the Victoria Hospital Foundation’s
highly successful Dr. O.K. Hjertaas Golf Fund
Raiser. Manager, Phil Fredette says, “It is
important to us to be involved in the community.
Health care touches all of us throughout our
lives. We see this event as great way to give
back.”
“In addition to being Title Sponsors with strong
financial support, they also provide valuable
leadership by actively participating in the
planning committee as well”, according to Rob
Dalziel, executive director with the Victoria
Hospital Foundation.
The 14th Annual Hjertaas Golf Classic is set
to go on Friday, August 26th at Cooke Municipal
Golf Course. Funds raised will be used to help
purchase Vital Signs Monitors for the Nursery

“We
are off to a tremendous start, said Rob Dalziel,
executive director with the Victoria Hospital
Foundation, Golfers and Sponsors have been lining
up to get on board”. Dalziel says while the
event is just a month away, Friday, August 26th,
we are going to need all the help we can muster.”
Our goal is to raise enough funds to help purchase
Vital Signs Monitors for the Nursery in the
Maternity Unit at the Victoria Regional Hospital.
Each monitor has a cost of $20,000 and five
are needed.
Last year the Victoria Regional
Hospital delivered over 1,600 babies. Many of
those needed specialized medical care and attention.
As a major referral centre for central and northern
Saskatchewan, mothers-to-be and babies are often
referred to Prince Albert if their doctor has
concerns about mom, baby or both. No child ever
asks to be born sick or with serious medical
challenges, Dalziel points out, the good news
is we have the doctors, nurses and care teams
that that are trained to identify and remedy
or minimize many of these medical challenges.
We need to have the medical equipment to help
them do that. In many cases the babies can go
on to lead healthy and productive lives. It
really is an investment in our future.
Businesses like Conexus Credit
Union and River Park Funeral Home along with
Memorial Gardens have taken a leadership role
both in financial support and also by volunteering
staff to help plan, organize and run the event.
Already the afternoon Tee-Off
times are filled however there are still some
morning Tee-Off times available. There are sponsorship
opportunities for businesses, groups and individuals
to participate.

April
is Aeroplan Month Donation Totals Announced
|
|
The
donation of Aeroplan Miles to the Victoria Hospital
Foundation during the month of April has been
very encouraging according to foundation executive
director, Rob Dalziel. In total more than 146,000
Aeroplan Miles were donated or transferred to
the Victoria Hospital Foundation. The foundation
uses the donated Aeroplan Miles to offset or
reduce fund raising costs throughout the year.
This year’s campaign had two major partners,
Malcolm Jenkins of Canadian Tire, who offered
to match each Aeroplan Mile donated up to a
total of 50,000 miles. The other new partner
this year was Home Building Centre in Prince
Albert. Home Build Centre also ran an in-house
contest for donors who donated their Aeroplan
Miles at the store. Eligible donors were entered
to win a draw for a $1,000 Home Building Centre
Gift Card. The winner was Bart DeMarie of Prince
Albert.

$25,000
Legacy Gift for Dialysis Unit
|
|

May is Leave a Legacy Month
in Canada. For many years the Victoria Hospital
Foundation together with numerous other charities
in Prince Albert and area promote this awareness
event. Surveys indicate that more than 50% of
Canadians still do not have a will. For many
of those who do have a will it is often out
of date and would benefit from an update to
reflect current circumstances and asset values.
Many Canadians do not realize how much the value
of their assets has grown.
The Victoria Hospital Foundation
has just received an estate gift of $25,000.
The donor directed the funds be used to help
purchase a Dialysis Machine for the Victoria
Regional Hospital. Several years ago the donor
contacted our foundation office to discuss the
Dialysis program and where help was needed.
In addition to gifts to family and church the
donor also included the gift to the Victoria
Hospital Foundation.
The foundation has benefited
from numerous estate gifts. Last year we launched
the Legacy Leaders campaign to indentify and
encourage estate gifts to the foundation. The
campaign yielded significant “intentions” from
those contacted.

Warmth. If you have ever been in the hospital
recovering from surgery you know how comforting
a warm blanket can be. When the Rotary Club
of Prince Albert learned a $5,000 Blanket Warmer
was needed on the 6th Floor, Medicine Unit at
the Victoria Regional Hospital in Prince Albert
they responded quickly.
Rotary Club President, Brian Bosomworth commented,
“Our members are always very interested in how
we can contribute to the community in a meaningful
way. This just seemed like the right thing to
do for so many positive reasons and we acted
quickly.”
Debbie Wing, Nurse Unit Manager said, “We had
a real need for the Blanket Warmer. We often
have many patients who are a little older and
keeping them warm can be a challenge. We are
so grateful to the Rotary Club of Prince Albert
for responding so quickly to our patient’s need.”

Here
is a great opportunity to “help the Vic” the
Victoria Regional Hospital AND you won’t have
to reach for your cheque book.
In the month of April you can donate/transfer
any or all of your Aeroplan Miles to the Victoria
Hospital Foundation. Remember, “Use them or
lose them”? Why not donate them? The Victoria
Hospital Foundation uses your donated Aeroplan
Miles to help reduce our fund raising costs.
We use the Aeroplan Miles to acquire fund raising
incentive prizes for events like our Dr. O.K.
Hjertaas Golf Classic in August and other events
throughout the year.
Once again, Canadian Tire’s Malcolm Jenkins,
has said: He will match your donated Aeroplan
Miles, up to a total of 50,000 Aeroplan Miles.
What a great way to double up!
New, this year, is Prince Albert’s Home Building
Centre. Wayne his staff at Home Building Centre
have a great way to help out. When you make
a purchase at Prince Albert’s Home Building
Centre and donate your Aeroplan Miles you earn,
at the store, you are entered for an “in store”
contest. Even if you don’t buy anything you
can still donate your Aeroplan Miles at Prince
Albert’s Home Building Centre and enter the

The Elks and Royal Purple through their generous
donations have facilitated the purchase of fourteen
dialysis machines for the Victoria Regional
Hospital’s Renal Dialysis Unit totaling over
$400,000.00 since the project began in 1987.
The Elks and Royal Purple became interested
in the Dialysis Project in 1987 when a friend
of a Weldon Elks member in need of Dialysis
was required to travel to Saskatoon for treatment.
Further investigation revealed there were a
large number of people facing this same issue.
The Elks District Deputy of the day Frank Sudol,
Royal Purple member Donna Backstrom and the
then director of the Victoria Hospital, David
Fan lobbied Saskatchewan Health for the establishment
of a Dialysis Unit in Prince Albert and convinced
them that this was feasible as a satellite unit
of the St. Paul’s Hospital. Saskatchewan Health
agreed they would provide the funding for training
and staff to operate the unit. The Elks immediately
made the commitment that all Capital Costs including
the purchase of dialysis machines and the continued
operation of the unit would be funded by the
Elks and Royal Purple.
The Elks of the Elks District No. 2 and Royal
Purple Lodges of Royal Purple District No. 4
which includes the communities of Big River,
Canwood, La Ronge, Paddockwood, Prince Albert,
Shellbrook and Weldon made a commitment that
they would assist in fund raising by working
Bingos and undertake other projects to provide
the hardware for Dialysis Treatment in Prince
Albert. All Elks and Royal Purple Lodges within
close proximity of Prince Albert agreed that
they would travel to Prince Albert to work monthly
Bingos at Carnival Bingo. The La Ronge Elks
agreed that they would raise funds in their
community due to the long distance that they
would have to travel to Prince Albert. The project
has also received in excess of $20,000.00 from
the La Ronge Elks and Royal Purple and a generous
gift of $10,000.00 from the Northern Bingo Alliance
(the Charities of Carnival Bingo). The fund
has received a number of bequests from the estates
of former patients of dialysis treatment.
The Renal Dialysis Unit opened at the Victoria
Hospital in Prince Albert in June of 1989 with
one nurse, 2 patients and support staff operating
3 days a week. The Unit currently serves 24
people per day working six days a week with
144 procedures a week. The unit requires updates
and replacement machines to continue to provide
service as these machines do wear out and also
require “back up” units while equipment is being
serviced.
The Order of the Royal Purple Lodges continue
to support the Victoria Hospital Foundation
with their generous donations. In 2001, two
beds were purchased for the bed campaign.
7 TV’s and VCR’s were donated for pediatrics.
6 TV’s, DVD’s & Stands were purchased for
the maternity ward. Funds are being raised for
the Herb Bassett Home. The Royal Purple has
also made significant donations to the Victoria
Hospital Foundation’s Annual Give a Little Life
Day Radio-A-Thons.

Price about the “sell out” success of the 2010
Heritage Christmas Ornament Program. The ornaments
quickly sold out well before Christmas. The
2010 ornament featured the Prince Albert Collegiate

recognize and feature the 100th anniversary
of PACI. It is believed many Prince Albert ex-pats,
now living in locations around the world, snapped
up or placed orders for the ornaments at the
100th Anniversary Celebrations held in the summer
of 2010. Heritage Ornaments are available seasonally
from leading retailers and financial instutions

Renovations
are underway at the Victoria Hospital Foundation
|
|
Work
is underway to add a little additional office
space to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. Increased
donor support and growing expectations placed
upon the foundation to help meet future hospital
needs have prompted the modest expansion.
The
Victoria Hospital Foundation was launched 25
years ago. Public support for the work and goals
of the foundation have resulted in more than
$8,000,000 in donations since it was launched
in 1985. In just the past ten years donors have
contributed over $7,000,000 in funds to assist
with the upgrade and replacement of medical
equipment in almost every area of the Victoria
Regional Hospital.
Rob
Dalziel, executive director with the Victoria
Hospital Foundation said, “the community in
both Prince Albert and across central and northern
Saskatchewan understand their donation support
makes a huge difference. New and upgraded medical
equipment also helps hospital staff to do a
better job of what they are trained to do. In
part, it is also about staff retention and recruitment
too. It can mean shorter wait times and quicker
recoveries. It is all about people helping people
receive the best possible health care. People
understand that. They are willing to do what
they can to help make that happen.”
Donations
for medical equipment can mean better and quicker
images such as X-rays and CT scans and much
more. It can mean helping a newborn with some
medical problems, at birth, receive timely treatment
to go on to live a full and healthy life. It
can also mean fewer costly and worrisome trips
to other distant centers for treatment. It is
really is about bringing better healthcare closer
to home.
As
a regional hospital the load and demands on
the Victoria Regional Hospital have grown significantly
and are expected to continue to increase as
Prince Albert together with central and northern
Saskatchewan continues to grow. The Victoria
Hospital Foundation needs to adjust to help
meet those increasing demands and expectations
for the future.
Renovations
to the foundation office space are expected
to be completed in the next few days. Meanwhile
the foundation’s office staff continue to work
as the walls are moved.

“the doctors and nurses who work in the OR Unit
are thrilled with the news. I spoke with several
of them early this morning and they are very
excited.” Drew Gray, chair of the Victoria Hospital
Foundation board of directors said, “This is
an excellent example of a local company doing
business in the region giving back to the community
they serve.”
The new medical equipment is
expected to start arriving within four to six
weeks. Some equipment will take a little longer
to arrive and several items will require professional
installation by trained technicians.

Rob Dalziel, executive director

“Donations continue to come in since the Friday,

radio-a-thon. We are amazed and grateful with
the tremendous outpouring of generosity we have
received.” Dalziel went on to indicate, “A combination
of circumstances have come together work in
our favour: a slower than expected economic
recovery in the United States means many hospitals
in the US have slowed or reduced their purchases
of medical equipment and a Canadian Dollar at
or near par with the US dollar has given us
added purchasing power.”
Drew Gray, chair of the Victoria
Hospital Foundation said, “While the foundation
and Rawlco Radio can take satisfaction in a
job well done the real winners are the people
who helped make this happen and ultimately the
patients who will use the Victoria Regional
Hospital”.
The foundation is just 8% away
from of their goal of $400,000 and is confident
they are in a position to fund the purchase
of much needed equipment for the Operating Rooms.
The equipment should begin arriving in the next

Hospital Radio-a-thon
raises more than $355,000 in just 12 hours
|
|
In
just 12 hours the 5th annual GIVE a little life
DAY radio-a-thon, organized by the Victoria
Hospital Foundation and Rawlco Radio, raised
more than $355,000. The money will be used to
help purchase much needed medical equipment
for the Operating Rooms at the Victoria Regional
Hospital in Prince Albert. When “sign off time”
arrived at 6:00 pm the phones were still ringing.
Organizers with the Victoria Hospital Foundation
believe that with late donations and donations
from those who were away they could reach their
goal of $400,000.
The Operating rooms at the Victoria Regional
Hospital have been falling behind the pace of
new and upgraded medical technology and procedures.
While much of the current equipment is still
functioning its days are numbered. Items such
as new operating room lights which use energy
efficient LED lights and tools used in laparoscopic
surgery are on the list to be replaced and upgraded.
In addition, other medical tools such and a
dermatome used in skin grafting and a tourniquet
which is used in 95% of orthopedic procedures
as well as a hysteroscope a medical tool used
to detect and diagnose certain cancers, fibroids
and in assisting with other medical procedures
are all on the short list of urgently needed
medical equipment.
Rob Dalziel, executive director with the Victoria
Hospital Foundation was optimistic the remaining
funds will come in. “What we have witnessed
today, from across the Prince Albert Parkland
Health Region, is a tremendous outpouring of
generosity and support for what we are doing”,
said Dalziel. The foundation’s volunteer chair,
Drew Gray stated. “I think this sends a very
powerful message to our politicians at every
level that the people of the Prince Albert Parkland
Health Region view health care as a priority
and today they voted with their wallets.”

5th Annual "GIVE
a little life DAY" set to go
|
|
Foundation staff at the Victoria Regional Hospital,
in Prince Albert, are busy making final preparations
for the 5th annual "GIVE a little life
DAY" Radio-a-thon. The fund raising event
will be broadcast live from the main lobby of
the Victoria Regional Hospital on Friday, December
3rd from 6:00 AM to 600 PM on all three of Rawlco
Radio's Prince Albert stations.
This year the goal is to raise over $400,000
to replace and upgrade urgently needed medical
equipment in the Operating Room. Victoria Hospital
Foundation executive director, Rob Dalziel said,
"Over the past four years we have seen
overwhelming generosity and support of our annual
Radio-a-thons. Together, donors have helped
us raise over $1,600,000 to purchase much needed
medical equipment for the Victoria Regional
Hospital. This is a tremendous outpouring of
generosity from both Prince Albert as well as
across central and northern Saskatchewan. People
recognize that the Victoria Regional Hospital
is their hospital. It is their "go to place"
for health care and it serves the entire region.
This year the focus is on the Operating Rooms
at the Victoria Regional Hospital. With donations
we can purchase urgently needed medical equipment
which can shorten waiting times, reduce cancellations
due to equipment failures, increase the number
of operations and even reduce the number of
expensive and inconvenient referrals to distant
centers."
Operating Room equipment on list includes surgical
tools such as: Laparoscopic Equipment, for minimally
invasive surgery. With shorter recovery times
many patients arriving in the morning will be
home by evening. Patients get back to activities
of daily living sooner. Decreased length of
surgical time will allow for more surgeries
to be completed in a day, thus shortening long
waiting lists. O.R Lights will use new LED energy
efficient bulbs, which don't turn out during
surgeries and cause delays and rescheduling.
A Dermatome used for skin grafts and reconstructive
plastic surgeries will reduce referrals to distant
centers. A Tourniquet which is used in 95% of
orthopedic procedures will help our expanding
team of orthopedic surgeons reduce waiting times.
A Hysteroscope is a tool used to detect and
diagnose cancer, fibroids and assist with other
medical procedures.
Dalziel pointed out The Victoria Hospital has
a skilled team of doctors, nurses and medical
support staff. One of the biggest incentives
in retaining and recruiting medical professionals
is to ensure they have the specialized tools
they need to do their jobs.
The foundation indicated there are many ways
to help. Call in your pledge during the Radio-a-thon:

Rawlco Radio “on air” staff Tour O.R. for GIVE a little life DAY

“on Air” staff Operating Room medical equipment that is urgently needs to be replaced or upgraded
|
|
On Friday, November 12th “on air” staff from Rawlco Radio’s three stations: Today’s Country 900 CKBI, Power 99 FM & MIX 101FM were given a tour of the Victoria Regional Hospital’s Operating Room #2.
The tour was in preparation for the 5th Annual GIVE a little life DAY Rawlco Radio-a-thon. This year’s goal is to raise over $400,000 to replace or upgrade medical equipment in the O.R. with new state-of-the-art medical equipment. Items such as Laparoscopic Surgery equipment, new digital LED Operating Room Lights, a Dermatome used for reconstructive surgery as well as a Tourniquet used in 95% of surgeries and a Hysteroscope which is a tool used to detect and diagnose cancer, fibroids and assist with other medical procedures are all needed.
As a Regional Hospital our operating rooms are extremely busy as a result our equipment is used a lot more, shows signs of high use and is also quickly becoming obsolete. Repair or replacement parts are increasingly hard to locate.
The benefits of having this amazing new medical equipment are:
· Less invasive surgeries
· Quicker recoveries and discharges
· Fewer cancelations of surgeries
· Fewer re-admissions and rescheduled surgeries
· Better detections and diagnosis
· Fewer referrals to distant centers
This year GIVE a little life DAY will take place on Friday, December 3rd “live” from the Main Lobby of the Victoria Regional Hospital from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. All three Rawlco Radio Stations will be broadcasting throughout the day. You can drop by and make you gift in person, have your gift announced “on air” or you can phone in your donation. You can also make your gift using our secure electronic web site: www.helpthevic.ca

As part of its commitment to give back to the community the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, “Christmas Heritage Ornament Program” has raised more than $10,000 to date. The funds are used to help purchase medical equipment for the Victoria Hospital. The program began 10 years ago and the Christmas Heritage Ornaments are sold through a network of retail locations in the city. On June 8th the Chamber presented the Victoria Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $2,700. It was the latest installment from funds raised.
Soon the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce will be announcing the latest design for 2010. The ornaments will go on sale shortly after the design announcement is made. Hint: it is something that is celebrating its 100th year
this year. The Christmas Heritage Ornaments will also be sold through the Victoria
Hospital Foundation office.
Bergen Price, CEO with the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce said, “We are pleased to be a part of this exciting and worthwhile program. The chamber appreciates the opportunity to recognize and celebrate some of Prince Albert’s unique and important heritage buildings. We also recognize that health care is something that is important to all of us.”
Victoria Hospital Foundation, executive director, Rob Dalziel said, “The ornaments have been a hit since they were introduced a decade ago. We know of many people who have purchased every one. We are also aware of individuals and businesses that purchase larger numbers of them for gifts. Some ornaments are ordered by people currently living in other locations in Canada and the U.S. who have a tie to Prince Albert. We think it is a great program.”
Some Christmas Heritage Ornaments from previous years are still available. Contact the Chamber for details at 764-6222 |

After suffering for years with a kidney disease, having dialysis for months, and eventually ha ving a kidney transplant, donated by his son, Choiceland area resident Harvey Thibault, decided he would like to do something to support and give back to the kidney dialysis program. Harvey talked to the Royal Purple Lodge #255, in Choiceland, about putting on a “spaghetti supper” followed by a “Kaiser and crib tournament” which they did. Harvey sold tickets for the super at the Co-op Agri-Centre, where he is the manager. In addition he received many generous donations for the fund raiser. The Pineland Co-op donated the food for the supper.
The Diamond North Credit Union came on board as a major sponsor donating tickets to a concert for a raffle, a cross stitch picture donated by Mary Basaraba. A gift certificate from Pineland Co-op was also added to the raffle. Elaine McLean – administrator from the town of Choiceland kept track of all the financial aspects of the fund raiser.
A matching of $5,000.00 from the Scotia Bank brought the total raised to just short of $20,000.00 so the Royal Purple Lodge #255 topped it. As a result $10,000.00 was donated to the Prince Albert Dialysis Unit at the Victoria Hospital and $10,000.00 to Tisdale Dialysis Unit.
This is an excellent example of how one person with a great idea and a coming together of the community accomplished a great deal. |

30 New Staxi Wheel Chairs Arrive at the Victoria Regional Hospital
|
Friday, January 15, 2010
|
| |
30 new special STAXI wheel chairs went into service at the Victoria Regional Hospital at 10: 00 am Friday morning. Each chair is equipped with its own license plate that features the name of its donor.
Roughly half of the STAXI wheel chairs will be located at the main and emergency entrance while the rest will be deployed throughout the hospital in key areas.
For years the hospital has suffered from a shortage of wheel chairs. The shortage was due to rapid growth in the number of patients now using the Victoria Regional Hospital and failure of the old wheel chairs as they aged.
The specially designed STAXI wheel chairs are quiet different in appearance from traditional wheel chairs. They are much easier for patients to get into and out of. They require a care giver to push them and they have a unique brake system. When not in use they take up less space because they can be "nested" similar to grocery carts. The wheel chairs are not designed for self-use or use on unsurfaced areas. STAXI wheel chairs have become extremely popular in hospitals, shopping malls, hotels, convention centers and airports.
The October fundraising campaign to purchase the 30 new special STAXI wheel chairs was expected to take as much as 30 days to reach its goal. However it was over in just three days! Donations of $1,000 per STAXI wheel chair poured in from Prince Albert and the surrounding area.
Drew Gray, chair of the Victoria Hospital Foundation said, "This was a fun campaign for all of us to be involved with. Our campaign chair Ron Kondra did a terrific job. I think everyone could relate to just how important these special wheel chairs are and the positive difference they will make. We are very appreciative of all those individuals, groups, organizations and companies who literally got behind the wheel chair campaign and helped to make it so successful."

Prince Albert’s two Shoppers DrugMart stores have donated $8,645.00 to the "GIVE a little life DAY" campaign. The funds were raised by the South Hill Mall and Cornerstone Stores through their annual "Tree of Life" campaign.
Shoppers customers purchased a "Leaf" or an "Apple" and the money raised was then donated to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase accessories for the new Endoscopy Suite such as a Bronchoscope. The images are displayed on the new $415,000.00 Endoscopy Unit.

New Endoscopy Suite Arrives at the Victoria Hospital

|
| |
A new $ 415,000 Endoscopy Suite is now installed and running in the Ambulatory Care Unit at the Victoria Hospital. Funds to facilitate the purchase of the latest "state-of-the-art" addition to the Victoria Hospital’s medical equipment were raised through the Annual 12-hour Rawlco "GIVE a little life DAY" Radio-a-thon.
The equipment is used to help detect and treat a host of colon diseases and disorders such as pre-cancerous polyps, colon cancer and bleeding ulcers. Using a tiny camera, surgeons can now see internal images with far great clarity and certainty.
A price reduction from the winning bid supplier combined with a record number of donations from the public helped the Victoria Hospital Foundation reach its goal to fund the purchase.
Sheila Long, nurse unit manager of the Ambulatory Care Unit said, "Our surgeons are extremely pleased to have this important piece of medical equipment available at the Victoria Hospital. The Endoscopy Suite has been on their "needs list" for five years."
Executive Director of the Victoria Hospital Foundation, Rob Dalziel remarked, "This is a great day for the Victoria Hospital and all those who donated to the "GIVE a little life DAY" Radio-a-thon. But most importantly the winners will be patients who will benefit for years to come as a result of having this remarkable equipment here in Prince Albert."
The next "GIVE a little life DAY" Radio-a-thon will be held on Friday, December 3rd, 2010 from the main lobby of the Victoria Hospital. Many groups and organizations plan their own projects and events to raise funds which they then contribute to the Radio-a-thon.

4th Annual “GIVE a little life DAY” Hospital Radio-a-Thon Set to Go Friday December 4th
|
Monday, November 23, 2009
|
| |
The 4th Annual GIVE a little life DAY Radio-a-Thon in support of the Victoria Hospital is set to go on Friday, December 4th. Donations will be used to purchase new medical equipment for the hospital’s two Endoscopy Suites. The goal is to raise $500,000. The new equipment will allow surgeons to use a tiny, high definition, digital camera and other related medical tools to see medical problems such as polyps, colon cancer, ulcers and a host of other gastro/intestinal medical problems.
The current equipment is old and failing. Parts are getting almost impossible to locate. The new equipment brings: reliability, far greater certainty in diagnosing and the ability, in many cases, to treat the problem immediately.
Colon cancer is the number two cause of cancer deaths in Saskatchewan. Annually the Victoria Hospital, now a Regional Hospital serving central and northern Saskatchewan as well as Prince Albert, performs more than 2,000 Endoscopy procedures such as: colonoscopies, gastroscopies and others. This year the numbers are well ahead of that and are expected to grow significantly in the future.
The GIVE a little life DAY Radio-a-Thon will see all three of Rawlco Radio’s Prince Albert stations (Today’s Country 900 CKBI, Power 99 FM and MIX 101 FM) broadcasting live from the lobby of the Victoria Hospital. The event begins at 6:00 AM and runs non-stop until 6:00 PM.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can stop by the Victoria Hospital on Friday, December 4th or call in on GIVE a little life DAY to 763-7421 or use the toll free line 1-800-667-9000. Another option is to donate "on line" using the foundation’s secure web site at www.helpthevic.ca . The foundation will accept cash, cheques or major credit cards. “Let’s Get Rolling” Wheel Chair Campaign Crosses the Finish Line in Record Time
|
Monday, October 05, 2009
|
| 30 Wheel Chairs in 30 Days… or less... Took Just Three Days! |
30 new specially designed Staxi Wheel Chairs are rolling their way to the Victoria Hospital. The Victoria Hospital Foundation’s "Let’s Get Rolling" Campaign has reached its goal of 30 Wheel Chairs in just three days!
Donations began rolling in so quickly that hospital foundation staff did not have time to update the three large Donation Tote Boards installed at the Gateway Mall and in the lobby of the Victoria Hospital.
The volunteer chair of the "Let’s Get Rolling" campaign, Ron Kondra said "I have never seen anything like this kind of outpouring of caring and generosity. I am amazed, overwhelmed and extremely thankful." Kondra continued, "Our goal was to obtain thirty $1,000 donations from individuals, families, groups, organizations and businesses. We had hoped the campaign goal might be reached in less than 30 days but just 3 days … this is fantastic."
Earlier this year the Victoria Hospital had asked the foundation to help meet an urgent need for more wheel chairs. The solution was 30 specially designed, non-folding, wheel chairs used by hospitals, shopping centers, convention centers and other public facilities in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. The chairs are light weight, extremely durable and easy to use. The Staxi wheel chairs, when not use, can be nested or stacked similar to shopping carts and require less storage space.
The volunteer Chair of the Victoria Hospital Foundation, Drew Gray stated, "The swift response and support should confirm to all in public office, at every level of government, that the people of Prince Albert and the citizens of central and northern Saskatchewan take Health Care very seriously and that it is a priority."
Gray added, "We believe there are many donations still in the process of coming forward. People may feel they "missed the boat" on this one. Our response is, no they didn’t, there is a bigger boat coming. The Annual "GIVE a little life DAY" Radio-a-thon is scheduled for the Friday, December 4th. We have been tasked with a very significant challenge by the hospital. We are going to need a lot of help on this one. Our team is currently working with doctors and nursing staff at the Victoria Hospital to finalize the information package."
The foundation’s executive director, Rob Dalziel, commented, "Over the past several years the economy in our area has seen significant growth. In addition, the population throughout our region has been booming. These factors have combined to place significant pressure on the hospital particularly in the Surgery Unit."
During the 12 hour "GIVE a little life DAY" Radio-a-Thon donors will have the opportunity to phone in their donations or make their donation personally, "on air" with all three local Rawlco Radio stations. Those interested in more information should contact the Victoria Hospital Foundation office at (306) 765 6105.

“Let’s get Rolling” 30 STAXI Wheel Chairs in 30 Days … or less!

| 30 STAXI Wheel Chairs in 30 Days … or less! |
If you have ever arrived at the Victoria Hospital with someone too ill, too weak or too injured to walk you know how critically important wheel chairs can be. The Victoria Hospital is in urgent need of wheel chairs. It is not uncommon to hear announcements over the hospital’s public address system appealing for any available wheel chairs to be brought to the Emergency or Main Entrance area. Frankly there just are not enough wheel chairs available at the hospital.
The Victoria Hospital Foundation would like to do something positive about this situation. They are looking for 30 donations of $1,000 each in the month of October. They want to raise enough funds to purchase 30 Special Staxi Wheel Chairs for the Victoria Hospital. Each wheel chair costs $1,000.00.
The Staxi Wheel Chairs are specially designed. They do not fold up. They are very light weight and very durable. Most importantly they are easy to use. They take up a minimum of floor space because they can be "nested" together like shopping carts when not in use.
Local retired businessman and member of the Victoria Hospital Foundation Board, Ron Kondra is Chair of the "Let’s Get Rolling" Campaign. Mr. Kondra said, "We we are inviting business, clubs, groups, organizations and individuals to purchase one or more Staxi Wheel Chairs." Mr. Kondra added that each Staxi Wheel Chair will have a plaque attached identifying the name of the donor business, group, organization or family. In addition there will be a Donor Wall Plaque identifying and recognizing all 30 donors located adjacent to the Staxi Wheel Chair storage and parking area in the hospital.
Mr. Kondra added, "If enough people really get behind this campaign we could reach our goal in less than 30 days. That would be terrific." Payment for each Staxi Wheel Chair can be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation by cash, cheque or VISA or Master Card. You can also make your donation online at the foundation’s web site www.helpthevic.ca

Festival of Trees to take a Time Out
|
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
|
| Over the past ten years we have received tremendous support from our sponsors, donors and volunteers |
The Victoria Hospital Foundation and its volunteer driven Festival of Trees committee have announced that the Festival of Trees will take a "Time Out" at least for the next several years. The Gala Dinner which has always sold out will continue but will move to a new spring date with a new themed format. Details regarding the New Themed Gala evening will be announced in the next several months.
Festival of Trees volunteer chair, Lyle Karasiuk said, "In total we sold nearly 250 trees through a silent auction process. Sales of high end professional decorated Christmas Trees peaked a couple of years ago and interest has been waning. In addition many of our volunteers have been with us since the start ten years ago and a number of them have expressed a desire to step back or step away from the event".
Rob Dalziel, executive director for the Victoria Hospital Foundation commented, "We have had ten years of terrific support from our sponsors, supporters, volunteers and suppliers. Many have already said they will continue to support the foundation in its current fund raising events and campaigns as well as future new fund raising activities." "In fund raising you must always be assessing where you are at and where you are going in relation to the broad community you serve and rely on", Dalziel also stated, "There are a number of new businesses and industries poised to move into the Prince Albert area and the foundation is very confident and upbeat about the future for both the city and the region."
Drew Gray, Chair of the Victoria Hospital Foundation Board of Directors stated, "The Victoria Hospital Foundation Office operates with a very small staff and a high degree of community and volunteer support. The foundation is striving to balance its fund raising activities throughout the calendar year. The foundation will continue to monitor the situation with an eye to a possible future return of the Festival of Trees."

|
| PHOTO: Top Fund Raiser, at $14,700, Rick Leaderhouse goes for the long putt as his team mates look on. |
180 golfers hit the links at Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Friday for the Victoria Hospital Foundation’s 12th Annual "Dr. O.K. Hjertaas Golf Classic" fund raiser. At the end of the day more than $86,343 in pledges, donations and cash sponsorships had been received. The money will be used to purchase a $65,000 "Computerized Pharmacy Dispensing Cart" for the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. The device is used to dispense prescription medications while increasing speed, efficiency and accuracy.
This is the second Computerized Pharmacy Cart the foundation has raised funds to help purchase. In 2008 a Computerized Pharmacy Cart was installed in the Emergency Unit. Foundation executive director, Rob Dalziel said the hospital medical and nursing staff have been very pleased with the special pharmacy dispensing cart. Dalziel stated, "Today, so many medications sound the same but do very different things. Also the correct dosage is extremely important as many medications are very powerful. All Nine Crash Carts at the Victoria Hospital will be Updated with New Defibrillators

| PHOTO: (Left to right) Rob Dalziel, executive director, Victoria Hospital Foundation; Malcolm Jenkins, Canadian Tire; Robert Mann, Mann Northway AutoSource;Kelly Bartel, Marsollier Petroleum - Esso Bulk Fuel and Lyle Karasiuk, Festival of Trees, Chair. |
All nine Crash Cart stations at the Victoria Hospital are to be updated with the latest "state-of-the-art" defibrillators. Funds for the program are the result of the Victoria Hospital Foundation’s successful "Crash Cart" campaign. The total cost of the program is estimated at $135,000.
Three of the hospital’s old defibrillators, purchased in 1995, were no longer supported for parts or service. The remaining six, purchased in 1999, were rapidly approaching the end of their service life.
Karl Johnston, chair of the Victoria Hospital Foundation said, "The foundation’s board could clearly see the benefit of raising funds to purchase the nine new units. We especially liked the fact that all the units are the same and that training, parts and maintenance will be standardized. When you are dealing with life or death situations sometimes seconds count and you want the best available equipment close at hand."
Funds to purchase the new defibrillators were raised through the foundation’s annual Festival of Trees event. Four of the defibrillators were purchased outright by:
Roger and Diane Mann & family, Mann-Northway Auto Source in Prince Albert
Malcolm and Melba Jenkins & Family, Canadian Tire in Prince Albert.
Marsollier Petroleum, Esso, Bulk Fuel Distributors in Prince Albert
One donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
The balance (five) were funded from revenues from the Festival of Trees.
Lyle Karasiuk, chair of the foundation’s Festival of Trees said, "A part from being a wonderful family event the Festival of Trees is also a significant fund raiser. Our committee, our sponsors and our supporters all pulled together to help make sure this upgrade would happen."
Betty Skarpinski, Nursing Unit Manager, Acute and Emergency Services at the Victoria Hospital commented, "The leap in technology over the last several years has been tremendous. The new defibrillators use biphasic technology which means lower levels of electricity making them safer for both the patient and our staff. Having standardized units placed at strategic locations throughout the hospital will be very important. Our staff will be able to respond quickly and will know each unit operates the same way regardless of its location."

| PHOTO Fun Center donated by the Starlight Foundation |
Ask any child about a stay at the hospital and fun and games isn’t usually the first thing they think of. But at the Victoria Hospital, in Prince Albert, fun and games could be part of the treatment. Thanks to a donation from the Starlight Foundation and Nintendo of America a specially designed Fun Center game station will help make their stay a little more entertaining.
The $5,000 Fun Center includes both a Nintendo game machine and a DVD movie player. The Fun Centers are built specifically for hospital use. Fun Centers were developed as part of a joint project of the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Nintendo of America Inc. The unit also comes with a variety of Nintendo games and DVD movies suitable for viewing and use by children.
This isn’t the first Fun Center to come to the Victoria Hospital. In 2007 the Victoria Hospital Foundation worked with the Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation and the Starlight Foundation to facilitate the first Fun Center donation. That first Fun Center donation took 2 ½ months to complete. The Starlight Foundation was so pleased with the results they indicated an interest in donating additional Fun Centers in the future.
Jane Antoine, Nurse Unit Manager said, "The Fun Centers are a wonderful activity for the children. A lot of thought has gone into the design and packaging. We especially like the fact they are specifically designed for hospital use."
Rob Dalziel, executive director with the Victoria Hospital Foundation says, "It can be difficult for children being sick and in the hospital. Often this is the first time they have been away from home and family. We believe the new Fun Center will brighten their stay"

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY MACHINE JUST DAYS AWAY
|
Friday, December 05, 2008
|
| |
A new high tech Digital Mammography machine for the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert is just days away according to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. The foundation’s 3rd annual "GIVE a little life DAY" radio-a-thon was a huge success. The 12 hour broadcast involving all three of Prince Albert’s Rawlco radio stations live from the main lobby of the Victoria Hospital realized just over $219,000 at sign off.
Donations poured in from Prince Albert and surrounding communities as well as from across central and northern Saskatchewan. Schools, student groups, first nations, service clubs and organizations came forward with their donations. They were joined by businesses and individuals each doing their part to help bring the total funds raised closer to the $400,000 goal. Many cancer survivors came forward to share their personal stories and to underscore the importance of having the best diagnostic equipment possible to aid in the early detection of breast cancer among both men and women.
Foundation executive director Rob Dalziel said when he returned home that evening, after packing up, he received a phone message from a donor. The donor had tried to make phone contact that afternoon but was unable to get through to the broadcast team at the hospital. Dalziel said, "Our donor fully understands the importance of this exciting new piece of medical technology and is anxious to see it installed at the Victoria Hospital as soon as possible". "We have been advised that it takes about 90 days for the equipment to arrive once the order is placed", said Dalziel. In the next few days Victoria Hospital Foundation will host a media conference to announce the donor’s name and to size of the donation which will put the campaign over the top.
A Digital Mammography machine works in a similar way to a digital camera. The Radiologists can enhance the image instantly and can also detect much smaller masses. Images can be emailed to other doctors for further analysis. Early detection of breast cancer can greatly improve chances for a successful treatment and full recovery.

|
| PHOTO: Members of Elks Lodges District #2 and Royal Purple Lodges District #4 celebrate their 21 year commitment of support of the Victoria Hospital Dialysis Unit with a presentation cheque totaling $30,000. |
A dream and a donation commitment to help fund the realization of that dream, made in 1987, has had a tremendous impact for dialysis patients across central and northern Saskatchewan. It was back in 1987 when the member lodges of Elks District No 2 and Royal Purple District No. 4 focused on a dream of offering dialysis treatment at the Victoria Hospital. The road to success wasn’t easy but their persistence and perseverance paid off and the program was launched. Since the program’s inception the Elks and Royal Purple lodges have donated more than $400,000 to assist with the purchase of dialysis machines at the Victoria Hospital.
On Monday, March 17th both groups were recognized for their most recent purchase for two "Phoenix" dialysis machines at a cost of $58,000. The lodges also announced their fund is in a position to purchase another machine and presented the Victoria Hospital Foundation with a cheque for an additional $30,000.
Karl Johnston, Chair of the Victoria Hospital Foundation said, "The members of the Elks Lodges in District No. 2 and the Royal Purple Lodges in District No. 4 are to be congratulated and thanked for their outstanding commitment to the Dialysis Program at the Victoria Hospital. Many people fail to recognize the tremendous dedication and staying power of organizations such as these. Their vision and resolve to get the program launched and to support it, year-in and year-out, is truly remarkable. We all owe them a great deal of gratitude."
The Dialysis Unit serves patients from Prince Albert, the surrounding area and from across central and northern Saskatchewan. Having the unit at the Victoria Hospital means many dialysis patients no longer have to travel long distances to other locations such as Saskatoon three times a week.

A generous donation from the Prince Albert & Area Community Foundation has resulted in a specially designed Fun Center game station being delivered to the Children’s Ward (Pediatric Unit) at the Victoria Hospital just in time for Christmas. The $5,000 Fun Center includes both a Nintendo game machine and a DVD movie player.
The Fun Centers are built specifically for hospital use. Fun Centers were developed as part of a joint project of the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation and Nintendo of America Inc. The unit also comes with a variety of Nintendo games and DVD movies suitable for viewing by children.
The Victoria Hospital Foundation coordinated the donation of the Fun Center with the other two donor foundations which took about 2 ½ months to complete. Victoria Hospital Foundation Executive Director, Rob Dalziel said, "The hospital foundation and the local donor, the Prince Albert & Area Community Foundation, are especially pleased the unit has arrived at this particular time of the year. It is hard for children being sick and in the hospital any time of the year. Often this is the first time they have been away from home. Hopefully this new Fun Center will brighten up their stay".
Barb Gustafson, President of the Prince Albert & Area Community Foundation stated, "Our foundation is pleased to make a donation of this kind which can enhance and enrich the children’s time while they at in the Victoria Hospital."

“GIVE a little life DAY” Medical Equipment Starts to Arrive at the Victoria Hospital
|

| PHOTO: SLT Tango Eye Laser |
The Victoria Hospital Foundation says, the first piece of medical equipment, purchased as a result of the highly successful GIVE a little life DAY Radio-a-thon, has arrived at the Victoria Hospital. The SLT Tango Eye Laser is now at the hospital. Equipment technicians from the factory are expected this week to install and calibrate the sensitive unit and assist with in-service training for the eye specialists and nursing staff.
On Friday, December 7th the Victoria Hospital Foundation in cooperation with Rawlco Radio staged a 12 hour Radio-a-thon to raise funds for the SLT Tango Eye Laser and nine Vital Signs Monitors for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The response was overwhelming to organizers and hospital staff. As a result of the exceptional donor response, totaling over $533,291.00, further enhancements have been ordered to upgrade the equipment capability. The hope is to have the new Eye Laser up and running as soon as possible. Currently, there are only two similar eye lasers in Saskatchewan. Prince Albert will be home to the third.
The hospital hopes to have the nine Vital Signs Monitors complete with upgrades in the ICU in the new year.

Radio-a-thon Generosity Overwhelms “Vic” Hospital
|

| PHOTO: Just some of the volunteers, Rawlco Radio folks, hospital and foundation staff who helped us rasie over $533,291.00 |
Victoria Hospital staff, administrators and patients are still reeling from an overwhelming outpouring of generosity following the 2nd annual GIVE a little life DAY radio-a-thon staged by three Prince Albert Rawlco radio stations. The twelve hour broadcasting marathon which originated live from the lobby of the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert was seeking donations to purchase a new SLT Tango Eye Laser surgery machine for the hospital’s Eye Clinic and nine Vital Signs Monitors for the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Organizers with the Victoria Hospital Foundations had hoped to raise as much a $300,000 or perhaps even $360,000 to help purchase the urgently needed equipment. However just before the radio-a-thon ended at 6:00 p.m. a sudden rush of unexpected corporate and personal donations pushed to total to over $533, 291.00
Donations were received from across the service area covered by the Victoria Hospital which is now a Regional Hospital. Many rural and northern community residents, groups and businesses participated. Throughout the day donations varied from children donating all or a portion of their allowance to personal and corporate gifts. Service clubs, staff groups as well as hospital staff and hospital departments participated too. Among the largest gifts received were: the Rebekah and Odd Fellow Eye Research and Equipment Foundation $53,000; the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation (the charity arm of the Northern Lights Casino) $50,000; a $50,000 gift from Rawlco Radio and a $180,000 gift from Prince Albert area businessman Art Hauser.
In announcing the last minute donations, Victoria Hospital Foundation, Executive Director, Rob Dalziel said: "With the additional funds we now have the ability to purchase upgrade modules making it this best medical equipment available today in Canada. This is going to make a tremendous difference in the level of care available in the ICU and the Eye Clinic at the Victoria Hospital."
Karl Johnston, General Manager of Rawlco Radio in Prince Albert stated, "The availability of the best possible health care is something that touches and resonates with everyone. The people of Prince Albert and indeed the people of central and northern Saskatchewan have spoken today with their dollars."
Hospital medical and nursing staff participated throughout the day explaining the importance and the improvements possible with modern up to date medical equipment. Betty Skarpinsky, Nursing Unit Manager with the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit said, "The difference between the old Vital Signs Monitors and the new monitors is like jumping ahead decades. The new monitors with their added enhancements will help the ICU nursing team deliver the best possible patient care."
Sheila Long, Nursing Unit Manager with the Eye Clinic echoed Skarpinsky’s comments adding that, "The new Tango Eye Laser with its increased sensitivity will minimize patient discomfort and reduce possible post operative complications".
Rawlco’s Karl Johnston, who is also Chair elect for the Victoria Hospital Foundation indicated that Rawlco intends to make the GIVE a little life DAY Radio-a-thon an annual event on the first Friday each December. Discussions are already underway with the Health Region and the Victoria Hospital Foundation to identify the next area at the Victoria Hospital that needs the most help." An announcement is expected in February.
