The Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) launched their $2.2 million NICU for the North fundraising campaign in September 2018 and reached a fundraising goal of 1.4 million earlier this year. The Foundation is excited to announce that as a result of a recent local donor’s lead gift to the campaign, they have now reached their goal. The funds raised will go towards the expansion and advancement of the Victoria Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

“Reaching this goal in just six months is both unprecedented and monumental,” says Sherry Buckler, Chief Executive Officer of the Victoria Hospital Foundation. “The people of Prince Albert and region enjoy a strong sense of self-reliance through local access to high quality health care. And, this community rallied together to ensure our most vulnerable babies have the best care possible in their greatest time of need.”

Support for the campaign came from in and around north central Saskatchewan, with a special donation made last week by Dr. Lalita Molhotra and in memory of her husband, the late Dr. Tilak Malhotra. Since arriving in our community in 1975, Tilak Malhotra became the first and only pediatrician in our community for nearly 20 years. Lalita and Tilak were the first maternal care and pediatric physician team in the north. Over the decades, the Malhotras safeguarded the health of both mothers and their newborns for nearly 42 years. Their impact on young families has been particularly important with the First Nations communities throughout those years.

“Health care has always been a priority for me and my family. As a physician, I know that having the highest quality care in our NICU is so important for building and sustaining our proud community now and in the future. Giving this donation means the world to my family and we will be so happy that our children are being cared for, right here in our community.”

“We’ve always agreed with the famous quote: never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. We are very proud to serve this generous and supportive community and are deeply appreciative to the Malhotra family and each person who helped to make this NICU happen.”
