The Herb Bassett Home is located in beautiful Prince Albert – Saskatchewan’s 3rd largest city situated on the banks along the North Saskatchewan River. The home is adjacent to the Victoria Regional Hospital and offers 142 long term care beds and two respite beds. It is the largest long term care facility in the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, and has been in operation since 1984. This special care home offers a range of personal and health services to patients who require 24 hour care. The Herb Bassett Home also hosts space for the regional Adult Day Program—a part of the Home Care Program.
One of the goals of any long term care facility is to create a home-like environment that fosters respect, safety, dignity and compassion for all.
Not unlike other facilities, capital medical equipment, basic resident rooms as well as residents’ common area furnishings are lacking. There has been an increase in complex care residents whose chronic conditions require intervention which, if the equipment was available, would produce positive outcomes assisting in lessening pain, reducing falls, maintaining skin integrity, and promoting nutrition.
Cognitively impaired residents would benefit from an ergonomic friendly space to ambulate indoors and out. An outdoor garden area prepared for such a population of residents would assist in maintaining mobility while stamping out boredom and loneliness. The room furnishings are aged, some dating back to the opening in 1984. An update to the 140 rooms, as well as three common dining and living areas, would further the home like environment residents deserve.
Over the past 30 years, fundraising for the Herb Basset Home was done by volunteers of the Auxiliary. However, in recent years, their membership has been in decline and they are no longer able to raise the funds they once were. The Herb Basset Home has asked the Victoria Hospital Foundation to assist them in procuring funds to purchase much needed equipment for their residents.
